Dysautonomia

Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for a range of disorders affecting the autonomic system.

These can include:

- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

- Vasovagal Syncope

- Mitral Valve Prolapse Dysautonomia

- Pure Autonomic Failure

- Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS)

- Neurally Mediated Hypotension (NMH)

Autonomic Nervous System

This is part of the peripheral nervous system and is a control system that helps visceral functions. Heart Rate, digestion, respiration perspiration, salivation, pupil contractions, urination and arousal  are examples of the involuntary actions the autonomic system controls. It is divided into the subsystems: the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. 

Symptoms

Excessive Thirst, Excessive Fatigue, Lightheadedness, dizziness, vertigo, anxiety and pain not from psychological issues, rapid or slow heart rates, orthostatic hypotension which can sometimes result in syncope (fainting), headaches, pallor, malaise, acid reflux, visual disturbances, numbness, nerve pain, breathing issues, chest pain, seizures and many more specific to each type. 

Causes

Viral infection, brain injuries, genetic reasons, compression on nerves, chemical exposure, pregnancy, connective tissue disorders, degenerative neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders, or physical trauma to the autonomic nervous system.

Prognosis and Management

All a very different depending on which type is diagnosed.
